The Causes of Bad Breath and How to Fix It
Bad breath can be a bothersome problem, especially if you don’t know why it’s happening. The first step to fixing your bad breath is understanding what is causing it.
What is Halitosis?
Halitosis, known more simply as “bad breath,” is an oral health problem. The main symptom of halitosis is breath that smells badly. While bad breath doesn’t automatically denote a more serious problem, finding the cause behind your bad breath can be a significant preventative step against more serious oral illnesses.
Causes of Bad Breath
Various factors may be the culprit of your bad breath, so it’s essential to think clearly about what is really causing you problems. Bad breath may be caused by one, or a mixture, of the following:
Dry mouth. A dry mouth is one of the most common causes of bad breath. It can often be treated by making sure you drink plenty of water. However, dry mouth can also be caused by certain medicines, a gland disorder, or poor breathing habits (like breathing through your mouth instead of your nose).
Foods. Some foods with a pungent smell cause bad breath. Foods like garlic, onion, and other strong-smelling foods will affect your breath after eating them.
Poor oral health care. Without good oral hygiene, food will collect on your teeth and gums and eventually rot, causing a poor odor in your mouth.
Periodontal disease. Periodontal disease is a serious infection of the gum line that can destroy the jawbone if left untreated. Thankfully, it can be prevented and treated if caught in time. If you’re experiencing bad breath, poor taste in your mouth, and gum sensitivity, you should see a dentist immediately.
Tobacco use. Tobacco products aren’t just bad for your health. They’re also bad for your breath. They stain your teeth, put you at risk for a variety of health problems, and are a common cause of halitosis.
Another health problem. People with respiratory illness, diabetes, gastrointestinal disorders, or liver problems may experience bad breath as a result of their illness.
How to Fix Bad Breath
Fixing bad breath can be a simple or complex solution, depending on its cause. Here are some common solutions to bad breath.
If you’re experiencing bad breath due to poor oral health care, you need to improve your oral hygiene. The best way to maintain proper oral care is by brushing your teeth twice every day, flossing daily, avoiding tobacco products, drinking alcohol in moderation, and avoiding foods high in sugar. If you have dentures, make sure you clean them every day.
Halitosis caused by periodontal disease or gum disease can be treated by your dentist. They will perform a periodontal cleaning that removes bacteria, tartar, and plaque that has built up on your gums. A dentist may also give you an antimicrobial mouth rinse to break down plaque build-up in the mouth.
By treating a health condition like diabetes, a GI disorder, or a respiratory illness, you may be able to get rid of your bad breath. You should also consider quitting tobacco if you currently use it.
