Tips for Stronger Gums

Brush Your Teeth Twice A Day

You should brush your teeth at least twice every day to maintain strong and healthy gums. The best way to achieve this is to brush your teeth once in the morning and once at night before bed. Brushing your teeth promotes strong gums by removing food and plaque that can cause bacteria growth if left for too long. If bacteria do grow, they can lead to tooth decay and gum disease.

Use Fluoride Toothpaste

Brushing your teeth daily is good practice, but you can ensure improved gum strength by using a toothpaste that is approved by the American Dental Association (ADA) and contains fluoride. Fluoride is an essential component of strengthening teeth and gums because it makes your teeth resistant to damage from acid, bacteria, and sugars.

Maintain a Healthy Diet

Eating a balanced diet full of nutrients and low in sugar is essential to maintaining good oral health. High-sugar foods like soda and candy allow the bacteria in your mouth to grow and produce acid that destroys your tooth enamel and can eventually lead to gum damage. Instead of eating these foods, consume a nutrient-rich diet that contains things like:

  • Fruits

  • Leafy Greens

  • Vegetables

  • Whole Grains

  • Fatty Fish

  • Yogurt

  • Milk

  • Cheese

  • Lean Meats

  • Nuts

  • Beans

Floss Daily

Flossing your teeth at least once every day is an excellent way to maintain good oral health and strong gums. Similar to brushing your teeth, flossing removes plaque and food particles from harder-to-reach places in your mouth, helping to prevent bacteria growth.

Avoid Smoking

While smoking can cause various health issues, it can also cause damage to your gums and teeth. Smoking is strongly linked to gum disease, an infection of the gums that can cause severe damage and even destroy the jawbone. Smoking also weakens your immune system, making it more difficult for your gums and teeth to heal from any damage.

Rinse Using an ADA-Approved Mouthwash

Using any over-the-counter mouthwash that is approved by the ADA and alcohol-free will help strengthen gums by getting rid of plack, slowing the development of tartar, and preventing gingivitis. The best time to use mouthwash is after you’ve already brushed and flossed your teeth.

Visit Your Dentist Regularly

Regularly visiting your dentist for a checkup and cleaning is one of the best things you can do to strengthen your gums and teeth. During your checkup, the dentist will examine your teeth for any signs of disease or damage. By visiting the dentist every six months, you can catch any dental problems before they become serious.
